General Motors and Ford announced they would team up to develop more advanced transmissions back in 2013. The two largest American automakers clearly made good on the announcement as the next-generation transmissions will roll out in 2017. In total, four Chevrolet models will see a new nine-speed automatic transmission.
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Premier will see the new nine-speed transmission mated to the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze diesel, set for release in 2017, will see that transmission mated to the 1.6-liter diesel engine. The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, set for release in the second half of 2017, will boast a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to the transmission.
There’s one more vehicle yet to come. General Motors expects that the fourth model will be announced in the near future. Other models throughout the General Motors umbrella will see the addition of the new transmission as well.
Chevrolet’s nine-speed transmission works with stop/start technology to further increase fuel economy. The transmission can also skip gears as needed.
Both General Motors and Ford rolled out the 10-speed automatic transmission earlier this year. The transmission is currently used in rear-wheel drive cars, like the Camaro ZL1, and trucks.
We at Graff Chevy welcome the addition of more advanced, efficient transmissions across the lineup!
